A recipe from a photo
3 minute read, 6 steps
Trycolors mixes the color you want from the tubes you own. Often that color is in a photo: a wall, a toy, a scene you want to paint. Here you take that color straight from the photo.
We pick the soft green of a wooden xylophone bar. A phone photo is never quite true to life. So we put a small piece of white paper in the shot, and Trycolors uses it to fix the colors.
- Upload a photo to the color picker
- Frame the part you need
- Fix the light with white paper
- Pick the exact color
- Get its recipe from your paints
Step 1
Open the photo picker
In Recipes, press Change Color. Choose the Photo tab 1.
It opens on a sample painting. You can try picking on it right away. To use your own photo, press My photos 2. On a phone, the button says Photos.

Step 2
Upload your photo
Press Upload. The first time, the button says Upload photo. Choose a photo from your phone or computer.
Your photos stay in your account. Next time they wait for you in My photos.

Step 3
Frame the part you need
Zoom in with the slider 1. On a phone you can also pinch. Drag the photo to frame the part you need.
Keep the white paper in the frame. Then press Done 2.

Step 4
Fix the light with the white paper
Press Adjust colors, then Auto 1. Trycolors finds the white paper and makes it white again. The whole photo is corrected the same way.
No paper found, or the square sits in the wrong spot? Press Pick white 2. Then drag the square onto the paper.
Press Done 3. A small orange dot on Adjust colors shows that the photo is corrected.

Step 5
Pick the color
Press the color you want. Hold and drag to see it up close in the magnifier. On a phone, tap and slide your finger.
The color you picked shows at the bottom.

Step 6
Get the recipe
Press Confirm. That color is now your target in Recipes. Press Get Mix Recipe.
The recipe uses the paints in your starting palette. To use your own tubes, save them in a palette: see My Palettes. To read the recipe and mix it, see Mix a recipe by hand.

Now mix your own color
Set any target, choose the paints on your table, and follow the guide step by step.

It is not required, but it makes the color much truer. Without paper, the picked color carries whatever tint the camera added. You can still adjust it by eye with the sliders.
Yes, any image file works. A digital image has no camera light to fix, so skip Adjust colors.
A screen glows and paint does not, so they never match exactly. Compare a dry swatch of your mix with the real object, not with the screen.
